I've run best ball as my primary format since 2019, when Underdog's first full 12-team slate proved a portfolio's win rate comes from roster construction, not lineup-setting skill nobody gets to use once the season starts. Six years of that taught me one rule that survives every rule change the platforms make: draft the gap between what the field pays and what the tier sheet says a player is worth. Josh Allen is this cycle's cleanest example. He carries an A1 tier grade and the No. 1 overall expert-consensus rank (ecr_rank 1), yet he's still going off the board around pick 28 across Underdog, Sleeper, and PrizePicks. That 27-pick gap between rank and ADP is the entire best ball edge, reduced to one number. The same discipline extends past quarterback: every pick, every tier, and every stack recommendation on this page is built the same way, off the gap between the field's money and the grade, not a preseason take that stopped being true in August.
1. What Changed for Best Ball This Offseason

The single biggest structural shift heading into 2026 best ball season is how far the market has diverged from the tier sheet at running back. Bijan Robinson carries an ecr_rank of 5, outside the true top tier by our A1/A2 cut, and the field is still taking him first overall (ADP 1.4). Jahmyr Gibbs sits right behind him at ecr_rank 10 and goes second overall. Two backs are getting drafted ahead of three receivers and two quarterbacks the tier sheet grades higher. That tells you the field is pricing workload security over raw scoring ceiling at the very top of drafts, a defensible bet in a full-PPR, no-lineup-decisions format where a bell-cow's touch floor compounds across 17 weeks of best-ball scoring math.
Where it gets interesting is the next tier down. Jonathan Taylor carries a B2 tier grade (ecr_rank 19) and the field is still drafting him at pick 7-8 (ADP 7.4), ahead of four A-tier receivers. De'Von Achane, also B2 (ecr_rank 23), goes off the board around pick 9 (ADP 9.3). Both are correlation bets on touchdown-dependent, game-script-driven roles rather than true bell-cow workloads. Best ball's variance format rewards exactly that kind of spike week, but it means you're paying a first-round price for a player the tier sheet has graded as the 19th- or 23rd-best asset in the pool. That's the gap Zero-RB and Hero-RB builds are both built to exploit, from opposite directions.
The receiver market moved the other way. Puka Nacua is graded B1 (ecr_rank 13) and the field has him going third overall (ADP 2.6), ahead of Ja'Marr Chase, who is graded A1 (ecr_rank 3). CeeDee Lamb (A2, ecr_rank 6) and Justin Jefferson (A2, ecr_rank 7) are both going in the same pick 10-11 range as Amon-Ra St. Brown (B1, ecr_rank 12). The receiver pool has compressed into a flatter draft-capital curve than the tier grades suggest. Practically: if you're building around wide receiver volume this year, you're not reaching for tier separation in rounds 1-3 the way you would have two cycles ago, because the field has already flattened that curve for you.
At the other extreme sits the single biggest value trap on the board. Christian McCaffrey has fallen to a C2 tier grade (ecr_rank 40) on a durability discount, and he's still going fifth overall (ADP 4.8). The practical read for 2026: running back bifurcated into a true elite tier and a crowded touchdown-dependent middle, receiver flattened its draft-capital curve across the first two rounds, and at least one former first-round lock is now a value trap wearing a top-five price tag. Build around those three facts, not around what the position used to cost in 2023.
2. Best Ball Roster Construction Scarcity

Every number in this guide comes from two layers stacked on top of each other. The tier and ecr_rank fields are the expert-consensus grade: the letter-number tier, A1 down through C2, buckets players into replacement-level bands, so a B2 running back and a B2 receiver sit roughly equidistant from the replacement-level player at their own position. That's the VOR (value over replacement) logic underneath the tiers. A QB1 and an RB1 don't get drafted at the same value points because the replacement-level quarterback on your bench is a lot closer to startable than the replacement-level RB3, so the tier gaps at quarterback stay compressed while the tier gaps at running back stretch out early and often.
ADP layers real market behavior on top of that grade, averaged weekly across Underdog, Sleeper, and PrizePicks. When a player's ADP sits meaningfully ahead of the tier grade (Puka Nacua, B1 tier, ADP 2.6), the field is pricing something the tier sheet hasn't caught up to yet: target-share trajectory, offensive-line health, whatever the market knows that a static grade misses. When ADP sits well behind the tier (C.J. Stroud, B1 tier, ADP 154.9), that's the discount best ball rosters are built to buy.
Stack correlation compounds on top of both numbers. Two players from the same offense who hit their ceiling in the same week are worth more to a best-ball roster than the sum of their solo values, because best ball only pays you for your best lineup each week and correlated spike weeks are what get you there. Every tier table, pick-by-pick page, and trade-up/trade-down suggestion on this site sorts off the same ranking engine behind that logic. There's one spreadsheet running the whole matrix, not a different one per page, so a stack recommendation here always cites the actual tier and ADP numbers instead of a vibe, checkable against the same data any other page on this site uses.
3. The 4 Best Ball Archetypes
- Zero-RB Best Ball — Zero-RB in best ball isn't ideology. It's buying the position with the flattest draft-capital curve at the top, then using running back scarcity against itself in the middle rounds. Look at the receiver pool: Ja'Marr Chase (A1, ecr_rank 3), CeeDee Lamb (A2, ecr_rank 6), and Justin Jefferson (A2, ecr_rank 7) are all going within a tight band of ADP. That curve isn't spread the way it used to be, so the cost of anchoring your first three picks at receiver instead of splitting between running back and receiver is lower than the tier chart alone suggests. You're not sacrificing much tier separation to load up. Where Zero-RB actually pays off is rounds 2 through 4. Amon-Ra St. Brown (B1, ecr_rank 12) and Puka Nacua (B1, ecr_rank 13) both carry legitimate target-share floors that don't depend on touchdown variance the way a bell-cow back's weekly ceiling does. Best ball only needs your best lineup each week, and a receiver with a 25%-plus target share throws a spike week almost as often as a workhorse back, without needing the same touch-volume alignment to get there. Malik Nabers (B1, ecr_rank 16, ADP 43) is the value engine in that range: a B1-tier receiver going a full round-plus later than his grade because the field hasn't finished pricing his target share. Garrett Wilson (B2, ecr_rank 20, ADP 26.9) and Nico Collins (B2, ecr_rank 22, ADP 23.7) fill out the same profile a round later. The running back side of a Zero-RB build has to be intentional, not reactive. You don't have weekly lineup decisions to protect, so a boom/bust committee back with real touchdown equity is worth more than a low-ceiling every-week grinder. Kyren Williams (B2, ecr_rank 28, ADP 32.5) is priced roughly at his tier and fills that role fine in rounds 3 to 4. What you want to avoid is chasing a name brand at a discount that isn't real: Derrick Henry (C1, ecr_rank 35) is still going off the board around pick 15-16 (ADP 15.5), too early for a Zero-RB build's actual running back rounds. That pick belongs to a receiver instead. The build only works if you stay disciplined into rounds 8 through 12, where you're taking four or five backs off committee or injury-created opportunity, betting that best ball's format-wide scoring (you only need one of them to hit) turns a modest workhorse-emergence rate into a real roster outcome. It's a volume play on the running back position, executed after you've already banked the receiver corps that actually wins you weeks.
- Hero-RB Best Ball — Hero-RB means one elite workhorse early, then nothing but receivers and value plays until the middle rounds, and the anchor has to be a real bell-cow, not just a recognizable name. Bijan Robinson (A2, ecr_rank 5, ADP 1.4) and Jahmyr Gibbs (A2, ecr_rank 10, ADP 2.0) are both going in the first two picks of the draft, and both clear the bar: full-workload backs in offenses built to feed them 18 to 20 touches. That's the entire Hero-RB thesis. You're not betting on a committee back's touchdown variance to hit. You're locking a touch floor that's already reflected in the tier grade, then spending every other pick on the position where best ball actually rewards volume of swings. The trap in Hero-RB is mistaking a strong ADP for a strong role. Jonathan Taylor is going seventh or eighth overall (ADP 7.4) but only grades B2 (ecr_rank 19), a full tier below Bijan and Gibbs, and De'Von Achane is going ninth (ADP 9.3) at the same B2 grade (ecr_rank 23). Both are legitimate players, but neither is the bell-cow lock a Hero-RB build needs at pick 7 through 9. You're paying top-ten-overall capital for touchdown-dependent roles, closer to a Zero-RB build's round 3-4 running back profile than a true Hero anchor. If your anchor pick lands in that range, know you're taking on more week-to-week variance than the "Hero" label implies. Breece Hall is the interesting case. He's an A2 tier (ecr_rank 8) going off the board around pick 29 (ADP 29.1), a full tier's worth of ADP discount versus Bijan and Gibbs at the same grade. That gap exists because the field is still pricing in workload uncertainty from his recent usage, and it's exactly the kind of number a Hero-RB build should be hunting in round two or three if you didn't land one of the top two picks: a tier-A2 asset at a tier-B2 price. After the anchor, the build goes all-receiver through rounds 2 to 6. You're not touching running back again until value forces your hand, someone at Kyren Williams' B2/ADP-32.5 profile or a receiver-tier discount at running back like Breece Hall's. The discipline mirrors Zero-RB in reverse: one anchor locks your floor, the receiver corps you build around it banks the target-share consistency, and you come back for running back depth only when the tier-to-ADP math says the field is discounting a real role, not just a name that used to matter.
- Late-Round QB Best Ball — Late-round QB in best ball isn't superstition. It's arithmetic on the gap between ecr_rank and ADP, and this year that gap is as wide as I've seen it. C.J. Stroud grades B1, 14th overall by expert consensus, ahead of Amon-Ra St. Brown, Puka Nacua, and every running back outside the top eight, and the field is still letting him fall to pick 155 (ADP 154.9). That's a 140-pick gap between rank and cost. No receiver or running back on the board offers anything close to that margin. He's not alone. Trevor Lawrence grades C1 (ecr_rank 29) and goes around pick 80-81 (ADP 80.6). Dak Prescott, also C1 (ecr_rank 31), goes around pick 58-59 (ADP 58.8), the priciest of the true late-QB tier but still 27 picks behind his rank. Brock Purdy (C1, ecr_rank 34) sits around pick 96 (ADP 96.3), and Kyler Murray, a C2 tier grade at ecr_rank 37, falls all the way to pick 149 (ADP 149.3). Every one of those is a QB1-caliber weekly ceiling available after your roster is already built. Compare that to what you pay for the top of the position. Josh Allen (A1, ecr_rank 1) still costs a pick 28 (ADP 27.8), three full rounds earlier than Stroud despite a similar weekly-ceiling profile in a QB-friendly scoring format. Patrick Mahomes (A1, ecr_rank 2) runs ADP 77.1, and Jalen Hurts (A1, ecr_rank 4) sits at ADP 93.1, both earlier than Stroud's price despite Stroud grading ahead of both on pure ecr_rank this cycle. Joe Burrow (B1, ecr_rank 11) costs pick 48 (ADP 47.6). None of those are bad players. They're picks you don't need to spend, because best ball scoring rewards a spike-week ceiling at quarterback the same way it does at receiver, and the position replaces itself deeper than any other on the roster. The build: take zero quarterbacks through the first 8 or 9 rounds no matter how good the run looks, then take two or three off the Stroud/Lawrence/Purdy/Murray tier in rounds 10 through 13. You're not chasing one QB1. You're buying a stack of tier-B1/C1 arms at tier-C2 prices and letting your best-ball scoring engine pick the week each one goes off. Justin Fields is the one exception worth flagging: his ADP (42.9) already sits close to his C2 tier grade, because a rushing floor gets priced fast in this market. He's not the value the others are, even though the name recognition makes him feel like one.
- Stack/Correlation Pivot — A stack ties two or more players from the same offense onto one best ball roster so their ceiling weeks land together. The quarterback's best game is usually also his top receiver's best game, and best ball only pays for your roster's best lineup each week, so correlated ceilings compound instead of just adding. The clearest value stack in this year's pool is Cincinnati: Joe Burrow (B1, ecr_rank 11, ADP 47.6) throwing to Ja'Marr Chase (A1, ecr_rank 3, ADP 3.8). Chase is a first-round lock regardless of build; Burrow at pick 48 is a mid-round add that turns Chase's every touchdown into extra roster equity. Philadelphia works the same way with Jalen Hurts (A1, ecr_rank 4, ADP 93.1) and A.J. Brown (B2, ecr_rank 26, ADP 14.5), except here the receiver goes first. The stack gets built receiver-out instead of quarterback-out: you take Brown in round two knowing Hurts is still available as a round-8 add. Houston follows the same receiver-out pattern with C.J. Stroud (B1, ecr_rank 14, ADP 154.9) and Nico Collins (B2, ecr_rank 22, ADP 23.7), and it's the cheapest stack on the board given how far Stroud has fallen. San Francisco is the deepest correlation play available: Brock Purdy (C1, ecr_rank 34, ADP 96.3), George Kittle (C1, ecr_rank 36, ADP 103), and Christian McCaffrey (C2, ecr_rank 40, ADP 4.8) all sit in the same offense. McCaffrey's early ADP means he's not part of the cheap-stack logic; you're paying full price for him regardless. But Purdy and Kittle are both late, low-cost pieces that convert any 49ers shootout week into stacked scoring across three roster spots instead of one. Dallas (CeeDee Lamb, A2, ecr_rank 6, ADP 10.6, with Dak Prescott, C1, ecr_rank 31, ADP 58.8) and Baltimore (Lamar Jackson, A2, ecr_rank 9, ADP 53, with Mark Andrews, C2, ecr_rank 38, ADP 130) both follow the Cincinnati pattern. Take the A-tier skill player on schedule, add the quarterback four or five rounds later once the position run has cooled off, and you've built correlation into the roster for the cost of one mid-round pick. Not every same-team pairing is worth forcing. Indianapolis has Jonathan Taylor (B2, ecr_rank 19, ADP 7.4) and Anthony Richardson (B2, ecr_rank 21, ADP 23.1) in the same backfield, but a running back and his own quarterback don't correlate the way a passer and a pass-catcher do. Taylor's ceiling weeks are often Richardson's floor weeks, since a Colts game plan that leans on the run reduces Richardson's passing volume. Draft Taylor for Taylor's value, not for a Colts stack. The rule that separates a real stack from a coincidence of team laundry: the two pieces need to win in the same game script. A quarterback and his lead receiver both cash on a shootout. A running back and his quarterback often cash on opposite scripts. Price the pairing on that logic, not on the roster page listing two names from the same city.
